My MacBook is a dud

Unfortunately there is a rather large thread (closed as of now) over at the apple discussion forums:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=544012&tstart=0

This started about two weeks after the purchase of my MacBook (black). After turning it on one morning it randomly kept powering itself off. I followed online directions for resetting the PMU, this seemed to work for a few days…

Then the behavior started again, with the shutdowns occuring before the system was even fully booted.

From reading threads around the web regarding this subject, it sounds like there is a problem with the logic board on these notebooks.

My return box is sitting next to my desk, apple is fully willing to take it in for repairs. I’m writing this after the macbook had a hard lock this morning, and then shut itself off four times in a row a few minutes ago.  There doesn’t seem to be any timing in terms of how hot the unit gets, the behavior typically occurs right when I start using it.

So for now, my macbook is a dud.  And this is really disturbing given how great of a unit it is despite the fact that it is currently unreliable and unstable.

Given the amount of discussion on this problem I will let you be the judge as to whether or not you should purchase a first revision macbook.  At this point, I wish there was a way to use OSX on a Lenovo.

I’ll keep this updated as the repairs progress.  I may wait a week to send the unit in, as I need it during the next week of travels for a family wedding.
